Tis the season! The kids are headed back to school! And, they will be out of our line of sight.
If you remember, we ended the last school year, only a few months ago, with school shootings and suicides daily in the news cycle. I don’t know about you, but my heart is anxious as I prepare again for a new year.
I’ve been looking heavenward a lot lately, asking God to change the state of our schools, from the inside out.
As a citizenry, we look to our lawmakers or specialty groups for someone to blame for the current state of our schools. We plead with them to fix it. But here’s the thing, men can’t change hearts. Only God can.
It breaks my heart that my kids are being raised in a generation known for school shootings and suicides, where death is literally everywhere they look. We are all touched in some way by this emptiness and we see daily the destruction that death leaves in its wake.
Here’s the simple straightforward truth, only God can bring peace to situations events, and even generations. He alone fulfills an empty heart.
Ok God so do that! Change our schools. Change us.
Help us look to you, Lord, for our peace.
In the Bible, we find situations full of death and discord throughout. The Flood in Genesis, the Israelites’ years of wandering in the desert, and even Jesus’ days were filled with unrest, just to name a few. What did God’s people do? How did they deal? They were people just like us.
They went to God.
Prayer is powerful.
It moves God’s heart to act when He sees our hearts pleading for Him. He sees our need and longing for His peace when we enter into prayer for more than just before a meal.
Moses prayed on his face for forty days and nights when the Israelites became too much for him to handle. He pleaded with God to change the whole situation.
Jesus, in the New Testament, prayed and fasted for forty days and nights before He began His ministry. His focus was about to change. He knew death and destruction were coming. Though He was fully God, He needed to show us how to seek His Father’s heart, making it our own.
Noah looked to God continually when it kept raining for forty days and nights. Though God had saved him and his family, life after destruction was now his destiny. How would they live now? God was literally all they had.
We explore these scenes deeper in my Forty Days: A Back to School Prayer Intensive. Though not a Bible study, this guide will focus your mind and heart on 40 areas of prayer for your student. Our students need Him just like we need Him.
Our schools need Him.
Lord God, we need you to move in our schools, just like You did in the Bible. Forgive us for kicking you out. We need you there with our kids. We need you to silence the cycle of death and destruction and replace it with life and joy. We need You.
You’ve told us that if Your people will pray, you will heal our land. We’re asking you now to heal us all.
If my people, who are called by My name, humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
